School accreditation in the USA is big business. The largest accretiting agency, AdvancED certifies    27,500 public and private schools, with 15,000,000 students in 69 countries. That's much larger than the entire private/public school sector in Canada. There are four other regional agencies, New England, Middle States, Northwest and Western. Each has a jurisdiction which includes several states, and some foreign countries. They all have Commissions for Higher Education to deal with Universities and Colleges. AdvancED is a 2006 merger of the former Southern and North Central accrediting agencies (SACS and NCAA).
